These are the wooden hand-carved figures that were meant to symbolize the islands’ guardians, chief gods, as well as spirit powers.

The early people of the Hawaiian Islands traveled from Polynesia roughly a thousand years ago and they brought with them several religious and sacred beliefs. The tikis are the representation of the numerous gods of both Polynesia and Hawaii. According to Polynesian mythology, the tiki usually stands for the first human being on the planet.

Oahu wedding photo with tikis

In Hawaii, the tikis were hand-carved in order to symbolize a particular god’s image along with the depiction of the god’s or power. The ancient Hawaiians believed that by means of the beautifully crafted tikis, it is quite possible that the people would strengthen their force in the event of a war, be shielded from any harm, and also be granted with thriving crops.

The leading gods of Hawaii that were exemplified by their tiki representations consist of Ku, which was the war god; Lono, which was the peace and agriculture god; Kane, which was the god of creation, jungles, sunlight, and fresh water; and Kanaloa, which was the god of the underwater world.

King Kamehameha II put an end to the early practice of religion called aikapu during 1819. Most of the ancient temples as well as spiritual images like tikis were ruined. But then, there are still several tiki relics that remain until now in honor of the era when austere religious convictions ran the ancient Hawaii people.

The tikis could take various crafted forms such as the huge sculptures, petroglyphs imprinted into rocks, god-like images engraved into boats or drums, as well as tattoo designs on one’s body. The artistic similarities produced in the tikis reveal such a superior level of workmanship and meticulousness. The most familiar tiki figure has a well-built, sturdy body that has a rectangular head and appears to be sporting a headdress. This mystifying character is somewhat an intimidating figure, complete with huge eyes and a war-like stance.

Ever since the 1930s, a tiki culture that represents the island lifestyle started to form around these unusual sculptures. There was a growth of tiki-themed restaurants that featured tiki torches, tiki carvings, rattan furniture, as well as bamboo or wooden products. Tiki bars were also put up and these bars offered mai tais in addition to other island cocktails. When Hawaii was made a state during 1959, the aloha shirt, the tiki culture, plus all the other island icons became unbelievably a huge hit all over the country. check out this hawaii tiki wedding

These days, one would be able to find some gigantic wooden figures in some key locations around the Aloha State, which includes the Polynesian Cultural Center located at the North Shore of Oahu. At La Marianas on Honolulu’s Sand Island, which is considered as Hawaii’s most renowned tiki bar, guests would be able to take pleasure in some tropical drinks among a great number of tiki memorabilia. Visitors of the state would definitely come across a tiki image wherever they go but these are not just any old figures, for they used to represent the ancient Hawaiian gods. Article by Oahu wedding and wedding themes

It is also a spot where tourists can bring their little ones along. The island of Kauai, in particular, offers a lot of pursuits for travelers who have kids with them.

For one thing, children and adults alike could try surfing with a real professional. Margo Oberg, part of the prestigious Surfing Hall of Fame as well as a 7-time world surfing champion, offers her services to give surfing lessons to interested visitors. There is no one else in the island that could provide more impressive surfing credentials than she does and the best way to learn surfing is to take a course with an expert. Kauai wedding photographer

Another water sport that parents could take their kids is to kayak along the Huleia River. This scenic river curves through the wonderfully thriving Huleia National Wildlife Refuge. Aside from being picturesque, it could also be educational. The whole family could get to spot some endangered species in the area such as the great blue herons as well as the Hawaiian gallinules as they take flight. Kayaking along this gentle river is perfect for all ages.

For children who are active and full of energy, their parents could take them to the Kamalani Playground situated in Wailua’s Lydgate State Park. This is an interesting playground that has an assortment of jungle gyms that are just right for kids of any age. They could clamber up the wooden jungle gyms, slither down the slides, dangle from bars, examine the caves, and simply have fun. It is a great way to burn up the kids’ energy and it is an enjoyable area to bond with the little ones.

If it is a sweltering day, the entire family could cool off with some Hawaiian shave ice. Across from the Poipu Beach Park, families should check out Brennecke’s Beach Broiler. This is a favorite place of both locals and tourists when they are craving for a traditional shave ice. This Hawaiian delight is made up of crushed ice that is placed inside a paper cone and it is then topped with some scrumptious flavored syrup. Normally, when people are having a hard time deciding on a flavor, they go for the rainbow one, which contains 3 various flavors all in just a single cone.

Children would also have a great time in the Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens. This lies on around 240 acres of land and it is dotted with roughly 70 life-sized extraordinary bronze statues. They also have tropical garden especially for kids. It showcases a tree house located in a rubber tree, a jungle gym, and a gecko hedge maze. They also have a Jack and the Bean Stalk Giant measuring 16 feet high with a wading pool underneath.

The kids would also love the Children’s Discovery Museum that could be found in Kapaa. In this museum, children could play with several native musical instruments, take part in a virtual television, and hide out in an enchanting tree house.

There are plenty of other kid-friendly pursuits in the Hawaiian Islands. These are just some of the activities that could occupy the children in the stunning island of Kauai.

Out of all the water sports in the Hawaiian Islands, kayaking is believed to be the most versatile one. People could row along a serene valley river or they could also paddle through the bumpy waters of the ocean. One could choose to kayak alone or even with a companion. Tourists could also choose between going kayaking by themselves or joining a guided tour.

One does not have to be an exceptional athlete to be able to take pleasure in kayaking. The kayaks produced nowadays are really stable, thereby eliminating the possibility of capsizing. As long as a person has the skill to sit comfortably and also has some upper body strength, most notably in the arms and shoulders, then one is prepared to take on kayaking.

Kauai is believed to be the lone Hawaiian Island that possesses passable rivers that are ideal for the sport. On the eastern section of Kauai, the Wailua River is recognized as a prime kayaking site. This is a good opportunity to observe nature and discover a few picturesque waterfalls on the island. In the Lihue district, the Huleia River curves through the Kipu Ranch, where some famous Hollywood movies like Jurassic Park were filmed. The Hanalei River takes kayakers on a beautiful trip through the Hanalei Valley. Kauai is also prominent for ocean kayaking, particularly those winter tours down the length of the stunning Napali Coast.

Some fantastic kayaking adventures could also be found on the island of Oahu. Among the most renowned kayaking locations on the island is Kailua. One would be able to find a protected reef that would allow kayakers to row to the Mokulua Islands. Aside from the area’s attractive ocean sceneries, one could also encounter some sea turtles and other marine species. The thing that makes Kailua among the greatest kayaking spots worldwide is its typically tranquil and tropical ocean water. However, first-timers should first experience a light kayaking tour and they might like to try the Waimea River in the northern section of the island. For fans of the Waikiki Beach, they could also go on a canoe ride in the ocean, which is a favorite pursuit in the vicinity.

The Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island is another preferred kayaking site. Kayakers could paddle roughly one mile directly across this bay in order to have a great view of Captain Cook’s monument. They might even spot a few adorable dolphins in these waters. The Kuamoo Bay is also a great kayaking alternative. One would get to see countless turtles, manta rays, and dolphins. This bay is also enclosed by sea caves, arches, lava tubes, and cliffs, which is why this is a favorite site among avid kayakers.

Maui also has some fabulous kayaking spots. The most celebrated ones are the Olowalu shoreline, the Makena Landing, as well as the Honolua Bay. There are also some outstanding ocean kayaking tours on Molokai. But due to its rough waters, only skilled kayakers frequent the island. Truly, there are countless kayaking tours in the Aloha State. As long as one observes the proper safety procedures in the waters, Hawaii is the perfect place to have a great kayaking adventure. Hawaii beach weddings

For many tourists, a vacation in Hawaii would mean endless days lounging in its numerous beaches. But then, one should know that there are still other adventures waiting for guests of this tropical state. One exciting activity that visitors could do in the Hawaiian Islands is to do some cave explorations. Most of the caves located in Hawaii are underground lava tubes. Some of these caves could be explored even if guests do not have a guide with them. But of course, for safety purposes, it would be best if tourists would join a cave exploration tour or at least go with someone who knows their way around.

The Big Island is home to some wonderful underground caves such as the Kaumana Cave. This cave is a lava tube that measures around 25 miles and it is located close to both Rainbow Falls as well as to the district of Hilo on the eastern section of the island. The Kaumana Cave is filled with lush flora, but its entrance is well-marked and one would also find a flight of stairs leading into the cave. Visitors would be happy to know that there is no entrance fee here.

The Kazumura Cave is another lava tube situated in the Big Island, particularly in the Puna area. This cave was discovered during the middle of the year 1990 and it is among the world’s longest and deepest lava tubes, measuring over 60 kilometers in length. Travelers would be able to take part in a Kazamura Cave tour but they should arrange it no less than 24 hours beforehand, or if they want the 6 hour tour for advanced climbers, they have to book it at least a week ahead. The available tours in this cave consist of a tour that would take two hours covering a half mile, a tour that lasts for four hours covering two miles, plus the tour lasting 6 hours that is only open for skilled climbers.

The Kula Kai Caverns is also located in the Big Island. One would be able to find this lava tube on Mauna Loa’s lower slants. The tours available here consist of a half hour simple walking tour and another tour that lasts for two hours. There is also a challenging three hour tour that contains a brief drive to the other section of the caverns called the Maelstrom Cave. Only a small part of the main cavern is lighted, and that is why the tour providers give out lights and helmets to guests.

Thurston Lava Tube is another long underground lava tube that measures 400 feet in length with a ceiling that reaches up to 12 feet. This cave is to be found within the Big Island’s Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The Thurston Lava Tube is well-lit and its ground is smooth, however, it could also be a little slippery.

On Maui, it boasts of the Ka’eleku Caverns, which is the lone public cave expedition in the whole island. This underground lava tube is the 18th biggest cavern system on earth and it is situated on the eastern coast of the island. The tours available in these caverns consist of a self-guided exploration, a walking tour for an hour, in addition to an adventure tour that lasts for two hours, exclusively available 15 years old and up. There are no lights in this cave but the tour operators provide both helmets and lights.

Hawaii’s caves are enchantingly beautiful and it presents an alternative to beach escapades. There is no need to bring anything if one is joining a tour group since they would provide the gear and all that they want is for their guests to have fun exploring the exquisite caves of Hawaii.

Since the Aloha State is home to around 15 bird species and plays host to a huge number of migratory birds, it is a fantastic place to witness some of this graceful winged creatures. Because plenty of the species are gone, there is now a fervent preservation effort by the government to limit the access to a few birding zones.

There are over 2 million agile birds that have made Hawaii their residence. Bird enthusiasts should come to the islands for this is where one could see some striking species that could not be found any place else. Tourists would also be able to witness here how the state’s avian forms such as the nene and apapane are being sheltered and protected.

Bird watching in the Hawaiian Islands is easily manageable due to the fact that there are countless tours run by experienced guides. The Big Island is considered as one of the best birding sites. Avian lovers from all over the world visit this island to see 3 unique Hawaiian birds such as the akiapolaau, which looks like a woodpecker; nukupuu, a tiny yellow bird; and alala, which is an endangered being.

Among the leading birding spots is the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Some examples of the lovely avian creatures that reside here are the terns, albatross, as well as the Petrels frigate birds. Mynahs, canaries, and egrets have also been found in the area. There are a lot of migrants that make use of the place as their shelter, particularly during their nesting period.

Because Kauai has several bodies of water, the island is therefore filled with local water birds like ducks, stilts, moor hens, and coots. This island is also a preferred dwelling of migratory birds. Another bird watching area that tourists could visit on the island is the Kilauea National Wildlife Refuge.

Oahu’s northern and eastern sections should also be explored by bird lovers. One such place that they could check out is the Kaena Park for it is ideal for bird watching pursuits. The island of Oahu also gives shelter to some terns and gulls that could not be seen anywhere else in the state.

Even if bird observers would be able to see several stilts in the plains of Maui, it is the island’s mountainous area that offers a rare and delightful treat for bird watchers. However, access here is strictly limited. The island of Molokai’s Kakahaia National Wildlife Refuge is also the dwelling of rare avian forms, but it could be challenging for bird watchers to secure access since the bird numbers are quite low at present. The Hakalau National Wildlife Refuge is the foremost national wildlife refuge founded exclusively for the management of forest birds. If one is able to drop by the area, it promises to be a first-rate birding experience.

For travelers who want to spot some rare and hauntingly beautiful birds, they should definitely come to Hawaii. It is truly one exceptional opportunity to be able to observe the Aloha State’s avian treasures. Hawaii beach weddings

Hawaii, being famous for its beaches, is also a seasonal home for whales. In fact, whale watching is a favorite activity of tourists and locals alike once the winter season rolls by in the state. There exist roughly 10,000 up to 15,000 humpback whales throughout the world and more than a thousand of these adorable animals stay at the warm waters of the Hawaiian Islands each year, during the latter part of November. The whales remain in the state until April and there are even some who are spotted until May before making their way back to their other home, which is Alaska. Hawaii photographers

Tourists would be able to see whales in the tropical waters of each of the Hawaiian Islands. There are plenty of tour providers that arrange either day or sunset whale watching cruises on both small and huge boats. Majority of these tours assure guests of some whale sightings, and if some visitors were not able to view any whales, they would be given a complimentary whale watching tour. Normally, the charge for the tour also incorporates a snack, a drink, some comprehensive narration, and there are also those who offer hydrophones on board the ship. These hydrophones would allow the passengers to listen to the sounds that whales make to communicate with each other.

Immersing one’s self into the world of whales with the help of a submarine is a fascinating way to observe and discover more facts about the humpback whales. In the Aloha State, Atlantis Submarines is the only submarine provider throughout Hawaii and it operates on Maui, Oahu, as well as the Big Island. Not only would the guests be able to see the whales in their natural environment, but since humpback whales are naturally curious about their surroundings, there are some of them who would even approach the water vessel.

Even if whale watching in the state could be done in any Hawaiian Island, the protected Auau Channel as well as the shallow tropical waters farther down Maui’s west coast are among the greatest places to observe whales. There are also boat tours available here from November until April and it departs from the Lahaina Harbor plenty of times each day during the season for watching whales. On the island of Kauai and on the Big Island, there are also abundant whale-watching opportunities and the boat tours are offered by experienced and expert guides.

If one is not comfortable on board a boat, humpback whales could also be seen from dry land. On Kauai, some great sites to start looking for whales are the Kealia Lookout, the Kilauea Lighthouse, and other elevated points of land, particularly in the coastal regions.

In the state of Hawaii, watching whales is a preferred pursuit, and similar with other outdoor activities, there are also rules in whale watching. Observers of these animals should not approach them either by swimming or via a boat within a hundred yards of a whale. But then, since whales are innately inquisitive, they could approach people and there is no law against that. Come to Hawaii to listen to the sounds of the whales as they “sing” and have an amazing experience like no other. Hawaii beach weddings

Endless stretches of sand and sparkling waters are what tourists expect to see in the Hawaiian Islands. It may be a bit unexpected but aside from being a tropical oasis, the state is also a shopping haven. The assortment of goods in the islands varies from elegant designer brands and chic department store products to some local handicrafts. In the Aloha State, any person would be able to purchase whatever it is that one’s heart desires, all at such affordable prices.

The heart of this retail paradise in Hawaii is definitely Waikiki, which is found on the island of Oahu. This is where one could see the stunning store-lined boulevards of Kuhio Avenue as well as Kalakaua Avenue that are crammed full of numerous galleries, boutiques, and shops. Hawaii wedding photographer

In Waikiki, there are some exceptional shopping centers that could be enjoyed by everyone. The celebrated Ala Moana Center houses around 240 stores and restaurants. Its charming decor such as fish pools and various tropical plants is ideal for some serious shopping. In this area, tourists could browse through casual beachwear, classy designer ensemble and assorted perfumes.

The Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center covers around 3 blocks of Kalakaua Avenue with its numerous finds that include some 150 boutiques and stores. Close to the Ala Moana Center is the Victoria Ward Center. People who are searching for other mall activities after taking advantage of its 120 stores could see a film in its 16-screen cinema complex or they could grab a bite to eat in one of its several restaurants.

For people who are searching for some dreamy Hawaiian scenery, the DFS Galleria presents an incomparable shopping adventure in the center of Waikiki. It is the lone shopping complex where foreign visitors could take pleasure in some tax free shopping. This is only possible if the Aloha State is their point of departure from the U.S. and if they would not stop over in the mainland once they travel for home.

The island of Maui also offers some fantastic shopping escapades. Aside from the countless stores located at the Whaler’s Village, one would be able to find some cafes, restaurants, as well as art workshops in the island. These art workshops provide lessons to interested guests on how to make traditional handicrafts. Another option for the discerning shopper is the ultra exclusive Wailea Resort. The Shops at Wailea takes pride in their various designer shops, the jewelry stores and quaint cafes.

When one saunters down the length of Kalakaua Avenue or even at the Ala Moana Shopping Center, both in Waikiki, a person could very well be in Paris. Each of the leading designer labels could be found in this area such as Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Armani and Chanel. Even if travelers might not want to spend their hard-earned money on these designer brands, it is still fun to gaze at the stylish clothes that are displayed prominently in the vicinity.

Shopping is undoubtedly a pleasurable activity that people love to indulge in, particularly women. But shopping in Hawaii is extra special because these islands are dubbed as one tropical paradise, truly unrivalled by no other place in the world. Oahu wedding packages

Among the 8 major islands of Hawaii namely Big Island, Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, and Niihau, the Kahoolawe Island is the smallest one of them all. This tiny island only measures around 12 miles in length and its area is approximately 45 square miles. The island’s tallest peak is the Lua Makika’s crater located at Pu’u Moaulanui’s summit, which stands at around 1,477 feet above the sea level. What is fascinating about this island is not only its small size, but also the fact that it is completely deserted.

The island of Kahoolawe, as legend goes, is believed to have been christened after Kanaloa, who was among the 4 major Hawaiian gods. Kanaloa was forbidden from entering heaven by Kane, who was the chief Hawaiian god and from then on, the disgraced god became similar to Lucifer. Kanaloa was then supposed to have been the ruler of the dead as well as every poisonous thing on the planet.

Evidently, it was only until the 13th century that the island of Kahoolawe was inhabited by native Hawaiians. Because of constant drought, these Kahoolawe residents transferred to the other Hawaiian Islands, which were able to offer them more water. For roughly 600 years, the island of Kahoolawe continued to be desolate. But during the 1830s, a penal colony comparable to the Alcatraz Island was established here but it was also abandoned soon after.

After being utilized as a place for prisoners, the island was later taken over by the United States military and it was used as their training ground. Back in 1994, the U.S. government gave the island back to the Aloha State. However, there was limited access to Kahoolawe until 2003 since the United States Navy had a job to tidy up the island first, owing to the fact that plenty of unexploded ammunitions remained in this isle.

These days, the island is being run and controlled by the Kahoolawe Island Reserve Commission. It is widely assumed that not every single hazardous explosive from the U.S. Navy has been removed from Kahoolawe yet. There are a few people who believe that the military had only removed around 25 % of their total explosives, so if the allegation is true, there are still 75 % of the entire explosives that still remain on the island.

In the olden times, Kahoolawe was an exquisitely lush island filled with flourishing flora and fauna. However, the goats that were brought to Kahoolawe consumed and spoiled the once thriving vegetation. Moreover, the powerful ocean winds also became a factor to the island’s erosion and Kahoolawe turned arid and rocky. This erosion occurred even before the military had taken over the island.

The Aloha State has already started the restoration of the island of Kahoolawe by getting rid of the grazing animals as well as by planting vegetations. This would really be a lengthy process and it would take numerous years before the island is entirely restored. Until that day comes, visits to Kahoolawe would be very limited and would require a special permit. But still, this historic place welcomes interested visitors. To get more information on possible access to the island of Kahoolawe, guests should get in touch with the Visitors Center located on Honolulu or the island of Maui.

The islands provide plenty of horseback riding tours and it typically lasts for an hour. For avid horseback riders, there are also tours that last longer than an hour. The pace of these trips is leisurely and both beginners and skilled riders are welcome to experience discovering the islands on top of a horse. Hawaii Wedding photographer

Riding a horse is an exceptional way to explore the Hawaiian Islands. In order to assure their clients’ satisfaction, the horseback tour providers arrange these trips in small clusters or one could even request for a private tour. A veteran guide would lead the tour group and would offer some detailed and interesting information. The usual stops are at scenic areas so tourists are advised to take a camera with them to photograph numerous amazing views.

On the island of Oahu, the most stunning horseback riding spot is the Kualoa Ranch, which is situated on Oahu’s eastern coast. Apart from its exquisite valley and ocean sceneries, horseback riders would also stumble upon some popular movie settings that were seen in movies such as Godzilla, Jurassic Park, as well as 50 First Dates. Other tour providers would also take guests for a fantastic horseback escapade on Oahu’s North Shore. Several points of interest consist of landscapes of Sunset Beach, Kaena Point, Turtle Bay, and Banzai Pipeline.

On Maui, the most impressive horseback riding site is Mount Haleakala. While horseback riding on this dormant volcano, one would get to observe some magnificent flora that cannot be found in any other place, such as the flower called silversword. The guide would also enlighten guests about Maui’s history in addition to the island’s flora and fauna. Another outstanding horseback riding area on the island is Kipahulu. This is a primeval land full of historical events. Visitors would be able to see some legendary places such as battlefields and they would have an opportunity to discover the history and culture of the native Hawaiians.

Horseback riding in Kauai is absolutely beautiful. Guests would get to travel around some flourishing tropical rainforests, glimmering waterfalls and gently rolling hills. Princeville is a prime horseback riding location here. The natural scenery in the area is simply breathtaking and one would delight in the Pacific Ocean and summit views. A few highlights in this place are a bird sanctuary, Kilauea Lighthouse, and the Anini Reef, which is the biggest reef in the state.

Waipio Valley is the most preferred horseback riding place on the Big Island. The landscapes are truly marvelous here such as its verdant tropical valleys, sparkling waterfalls, and cliff edges, among others. There are also some horseback riding providers that would be able to take guests for an exploration of Captain Cook’s Monument as well as the Kealakekua Bay.

But then, prior to booking the horseback riding adventure, one should check first with the tour company if they have some height, weight, and age restrictions. In that way, visitors would know if they could get to ride these magnificent animals. Horses are not only lovely, but they are warm and well-mannered as well. So guests of Hawaii who are planning to embark on a horseback riding escapade should get ready for the ride of their lifetime.

But not all the islands have a vibrant nightlife.

On Lanai, the only usual nightlife spots are the Lanai Playhouse in addition to its two resorts, namely the Four Seasons Resort Lanai and The Lodge at Koele. The Lanai Playhouse is a remarkable 1920s structure that has gathered several awards for the renovations made on this building. When this 150-seater site opened back in 1993, it surprised the locals by presenting films with Dolby sound. This was quite modern for the old-fashioned island.

In the great hall of The Lodge at Koele, local musicians croon to the guests with classical, contemporary Hawaiian music, as well as other genres. Their special programs take place during weekends, but on weekdays, they still show some nightly entertainment from 7 until 10 in the evening.

On the island of Maui, the nightlife choices are very limited. People usually set out to Maui Brews, which is situated in Lahaina or to Casanova, which is located in Makawao. Since these two places are in various sections of this extensive island, revelers would need to travel far to these two clubs or they could just check out the events in the major hotels close to them. These hotels normally contain lobby lounges that provide mellow jazz, hula performances, or Hawaiian music that also begins at sunset.

On the island of Oahu, the nightlife is truly alive. There are dinner performances, night clubs, symphony concerts, as well as sporting events. Each evening on Oahu provides one with a variety of activities. Night owls who are looking for some action do not have to leave Waikiki. There are countless night clubs in the area that could prove delightful to avid party-goers. Tourists could also catch some fantastic dinner shows that feature Island legends such as the Society of Seven, Don Ho, or John Hirokawa, who is a renowned illusionist. Those seeking a happy and light evening should come and see the much loved Hawaii comedians such as Mel Cabang, Andy Bumatai and Frank De Lima.
